On January 22, 2018, the Access Board issued a correction to the Section 508 Final Rule, published in January 2017, to reestablish standards for TTY devices. The standards were mistakenly left out of the Final Rule, and the corrections issued by the Access Board will go into effect on March 23, 2018.
When the Final Rule for the 508 Refresh was published, the Access Board did not include standards for real-time text (RTT). The RTT standards were intended to replace the standards for TTY devices, but the standards were withheld since the FCC issued a notice of intent to regulate RTT. As a result, the TTY standards, which were removed from Section 508 to make room for RTT standards, were not added back into Section 508.
The newly-issued TTY provisions are the same as the ones in the pre-Refresh 508 standards, with minor corrections for formatting and typos.
