The tactics and strategies we’ve used in digital accessibility for the last 10 to 15 years have definitely shown pockets of success, but they haven’t led to resounding industry-wide success. You need to look no further than the annual State of Digital Accessibility industry report to see that while most organizations believe accessibility is valuable and important, it’s still not a priority for many.
It’s time for something new.
Success with accessibility will only come when organizations realize they need to stop thinking of accessibility as “something the engineers to do” and start shifting accessibility further left in the organization. And shifting left doesn’t mean that we should just “test earlier” – it means we need to distribute responsibility and accountability further left in the organization. If you’re leaving your engineers on their own to handle accessibility, you’re addressing it way too late in the game.

Gina’s research on accessibility has appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Brand, and she is a frequent speaker at accessibility conferences and events.
