Research reveals industry trends, challenges for accessibility programs, and insights about testing solutions

VIENNA, VA – March 20, 2019– Level Access, the global leader in digital accessibility, and G3ict, an accessibility advocacy group with global outreach, announced today the publication of the first State of Digital Accessibility Report. The research report reveals the results of a survey of 550 professionals in various roles related to digital accessibility including legal, compliance, product, design, and marketing.

“We at Level Access have long felt that our industry is best served by data that can be used to inform and justify digital accessibility investments,” said Tim Springer, CEO of Level Access. “Our goal is for this report to be a useful benchmarking tool for organizations to measure and ensure their investments in digital accessibility has the greatest impact possible. Ultimately, this is all in the service of our industry’s long-term goal to ensure equal access to technology for all.”

“The exceptionally high number of responses shows the considerable interest for trends in accessibility implementation,” said Axel Leblois, president and executive director of G3ict. “We encourage organizations to go through the detailed results of the survey and compare them to their own experience and hope that those results will help advance their endeavors and the accessibility profession at large.”

Working with G3ict and IAAP membership to survey as many accessibility professionals as possible, the report explores current trends in accessibility programs, tools, and testing, as well as legal trends and accessibility in marketing programs.

Key findings from the 2019 Report:

  • The top three challenges for organizations with regards to their digital accessibility program include incorporating accessibility earlier in the development lifecycle, budget, and training.
  • 72 percent of organizations with over 5,000 employees have a full-time role dedicated to accessibility.
  • 85.5 percent of those in legal or compliance roles say they want the Americans with Disabilities Act updated to include specific regulations for digital accessibility.
  • 48.2 percent of survey respondents stated their organization does not perform testing by people with disabilities.
  • Fewer than three in 10 marketers are using alternative text in social media posts.
