The 2020 State of Digital Accessibility Report

Research on accessibility programs presented to help organizations better serve people with disabilities during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vienna, VA – May 21, 2020

Level Access, the global leader in digital accessibility, in collaboration with G3ict and IAAP, announced today the publication of the annual State of Digital Accessibility Report. The research report reveals the results of a survey of 1,119 professionals in various roles related to digital accessibility including legal, compliance, product, design, and content creation.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought into sharp relief the role that technology plays in ensuring safe and equal access to many aspects of modern society,” said Tim Springer, CEO of Level Access. “Ensuring access to technology is provided to people with disabilities – digital accessibility – is a way to protect a profoundly vulnerable population in the time of the pandemic.”

“The doubling of survey responses year over year shows the considerable interest for trends in accessibility implementation,” said Axel Leblois, president and executive director of G3ict. “We encourage organizations to go through the detailed results of the survey and compare them to their own experience and hope that those results will help advance their endeavors and the accessibility profession at large.”

Working with G3ict and IAAP membership to survey as many accessibility professionals as possible, the report explores current trends in accessibility programs, tools, and testing, as well as legal trends, procurement, and accessibility in marketing programs.

Key findings from the 2020 Report:

  • Nearly 68% of participants said that their organization feels compelled to be inclusive of people with disabilities.
  • Nearly 70% of organizations outsource at least one accessibility task.
  • While 94% agree that testing by people with disabilities is important, 56% of organizations are not doing it.
  • More than 35% of participants stated that it was challenging to hire people with experience in digital accessibility.
  • 55% of organizations have prioritized buying a product or solution because of its accessibility.
  • 60% of organizations reported that current litigation trends have motivated them to move faster to achieve accessibility compliance.
