Queens, New York, June 25, 2014 — eSSENTIAL Accessibility is pleased to announce that PS 811Q is the first public school in the U.S. to offer the eSSENTIAL Accessibility app on its website. People who cannot browse the web using conventional methods, due to conditions such as paralysis or cerebral palsy, can use the app to navigate completely hands free using tools like motion technology and voice-activated navigation. Students, parents and faculty with disabilities will now be able to use the app to access vital information on the PS811Q website like schedules, event information, educational resources and much more.

The eSSENTIAL Accessibility assistive technology app provides keyboard and mouse replacement tools that help people with physical, reading and age-related disabilities navigate the web. The app is free of charge to the end-user and can be downloaded by clicking the blue wheelchair and keyboard icon located on the PS 811Q website. Once downloaded, the app can be used on any website.

“Most schools understand the importance of accommodating people with disabilities and it’s fantastic how far the education system has come in providing equal learning opportunities for all students,” says Simon Dermer, Managing Director, eSSENTIAL Accessibility. “Where PS 811Q is truly a pioneer is in recognizing that the school community is so much more than just students – it’s faculty, friends and family, volunteers and more – and by making its website more inclusive to people with disabilities, it is paving new ground and redefining what it means to provide equal opportunity in education.”

“We are extremely proud to be the first school in the country to provide this groundbreaking app on our website,” says Penny Ryan, Principal, PS 811Q. “Education is so much more than just teaching students inside a classroom – it is a large group of people working together, on many levels, to provide the future generation with everything they need to be participating and contributing members of society. By offering this app, we are able to better reach and involve all members of the PS 811Q community and empower them to become active participants in providing the brightest possible future for all students.”
