TORONTO, Feb. 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) is transforming its web experience for people with disabilities using groundbreaking accessibility software. The technology is part of a comprehensive solution to improve digital accessibility. TTUHSC El Paso has partnered with eSSENTIAL Accessibility, a company that helps organizations integrate assistive technologies with accessibility standards.

To help achieve its goal of a completely inclusive web experience, TTUHSC El Paso is conducting a multi-phased assessment of its web design standards against the
Web Accessibility Initiative’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. Additionally, the school offers eSSENTIAL Accessibility’s powerful suite of assistive technologies delivered as a free app that can be downloaded directly from its website.

Through this initiative, the university is empowering students, faculty, staff, and web visitors with disabilities to have a seamless experience on its website, regardless of ability.

“Allowing people with disabilities to have equal access to our digital platforms is an extension of our mission to improve the overall accessibility of health education in our community,” says Tammy Salazar, Ph.D., TTUHSC El Paso director of academic and disability support.

People with physical disabilities, including arthritis, paralysis, and multiple sclerosis, can now benefit from hands-free face tracking, mouse alternatives, and voice-activated navigation capabilities.

“We are proud to welcome Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso into the coalition of higher education institutions committed to enhancing the digital experience,” says Simon Dermer, managing director of eSSENTIAL Accessibility. “The app will allow TTUHSC El Paso to become a virtual adaptive technology center and accommodate students with disabilities.”
